Certificate of Merit (CM)
Website: MTAC Certificate of Merit

The Certificate of Merit® (CM) program is run by the Music Teachers’ Association of California (MTAC).
Established in 1933, it offers a structured curriculum across multiple levels—from beginner to advanced—for instruments including piano, voice, strings, and winds.
The program evaluates students in performance, technique, ear training, sight‑reading/singing, and music theory.
Each year between mid-February and March, students perform assigned pieces for a judge and complete a written theory exam. Evaluations can be taken in person or online.
Successful students receive an official CM Certificate, with special seals or senior medallions awarded to high-achieving participants.
Exceptional performers may be invited to play at the annual MTAC State Convention
Guild Audition
Website: National Guild of Piano Teachers (American College of Musicians)
The National Guild Auditions program is administered by the National Guild of Piano Teachers, part of the American College of Musicians.
Founded in 1929, it now operates over 850 audition centers worldwide and serves over 100,000 students annually.
Guild Auditions are non‑competitive evaluations, where students perform for adjudicators based on individual merit—not competing against others.
Participants may enter categories such as Hobbyist, District, State, National, or International, and may perform up to 20 memorized pieces. Assessments can include repertoire, scales, arpeggios, and musical understanding questions.
Formats include in-person auditions at established centers, live online sessions, or pre-recorded video submissions (e.g., via YouTube) acmglobal.orgacmglobal.org.
Students receive detailed feedback, performance reports, a certificate, and sometimes pins or medals. The focus is on long-term growth, stage experience, and musical discipline, with diploma tracks available for senior, collegiate, or young artist participants.
